Fiberglass Windows: A Worthwhile
Investment For Any Home
Advertisment
Fiberglass windows, being made up of extremely fine fiber of glass or
fiberglass, continues to remain as an unfamiliar product in the market.
However, recent technological advances as well as the entry of many manufacturers have increased the number of
fiberglass windows offering in the market.
Unique Characteristics
Fiberglass windows
are more beneficial than
other types of windows because of its unique characteristics which are as follows:
- Stability – These windows expand and
contract similar to the rate of glass. Because of this, it produces less torsion and stress between the frame
and the glass during cold weather. Fiberglass windows also reduce
air leakage and decreases stress on the locking mechanisms.
- Thermal Efficiency – Since these
windows are made of fiberglass, used originally as an insulating material, they do not require what
manufacturers call a “thermal break” like aluminum windows do.
Furthermore, fiberglass windows do not require aluminium or steel stiffeners like vinyl windows
do.
- Durable – Fiberglass windows are more
durable than most window types. They maintain their strength even in
extreme weather conditions. Its strength also allows slim sightlines
required of casement and awning windows. Furthermore, the same
characteristic allows manufacturing of fiberglass windows with
larger glass areas. Unlike wood, fiberglass windows will not
discolor, rot, or warp unlike wood-based windows. These windows will
not sag, crack, or shrink over time unlike vinyl windows.
Manufacturers also claim that because of inherent strength of fiberglass, these windows are eight times
stronger than vinyl and considered twice as strong as steel.
- Low Environmental Impact – Fiberglass
windows are eco-friendly and do not pose significant harm to the environment. Fiberglass from these windows are easily recycled and made into new
fiberglass. Owners of fiberglass windows also claim that they are
easy to clean and maintenance free.
Other Advantages – With the increasing
interest in fiberglass windows, many manufacturers now offer a variety of types including casement, single hung,
double hung, slider, and picture designs with a variety of grills.
However, color options limited production and sale of fiberglass windows in the past. Manufacturers recently discovered that these windows are can readily take paint
with excellent adhesion. In addition, many firms are starting to coat their products in a wide range of hues
thereby increasing variety and marketability of these windows.
Disadvantages
Most homeowners
consider the price of fiberglass windows as its greatest disadvantage. However, others believe that its higher price usually
translate into a lasting investment. In the past, fiberglass windows are only available with clear, see through
glass. However, as mentioned, this
no longer poses a problem.
With the unique
characteristics and advantages of fiberglass windows, consumers now have an effective alternative that
works. In addition, builders and
remodelers will face fewer problems from callback issues because fiberglass
windows maintain their structural integrity
overtime. The unique features of
these windows will ensure consumers that its frames will not sag, and tracks will not jam when
used. Therefore, properly
manufactured and installed fiberglass windows may be the last set of windows a homeowner would ever
need.
